1) What it actually is

A three-day audit, then a rebuild
Energy mapping is a three-day audit of your own alertness, followed by a schedule rebuilt around what the audit shows. You track your energy — one number, a few times a day — until a pattern surfaces. Then you stop assigning tasks to whichever hour happens to be open, and start assigning them to the hours where your brain can actually do that kind of work.
The word “energy” is doing a lot of quiet work here, so let’s be precise. It isn’t motivation and it isn’t willpower. It’s the measurable stuff: alertness, working memory, mood, and how much friction you feel starting something. Those things move on a schedule. Yours is a little different from mine, but it moves.
Where it comes from: In the 1950s, sleep researcher Nathaniel Kleitman found that sleep cycles through stages roughly every 90 minutes. He then proposed something more interesting — that the cycle doesn’t stop when you wake up. He called it the Basic Rest-Activity Cycle: a wave of higher and lower alertness rolling through your whole day, every 90 to 120 minutes, whether you’re honoring it or not. Chronobiology has been filling in the details ever since.
Most productivity advice assumes you are a machine with a battery that drains evenly. You are closer to a tide.
How to use it today:
Set three phone alarms — mid-morning, mid-afternoon, early evening.
At each one, write two things: a 1–10 energy number and what you were doing.
Do it for three days. That’s it. Three days is enough to see the shape; a week makes it obvious.
2) The pattern you’re going to find

Peak, trough, rebound
Daniel Pink pulled the research together in When, and the daily shape is consistent enough to plan against: peak, trough, rebound.
The peak is your sharpest window — usually the first few hours after you’ve been up a while. Vigilance is high, distraction is low. This is where analytical work belongs: the spreadsheet, the edit, the thing with a right answer.
The trough is the afternoon dip. Mood drops, focus drops, error rates climb. It’s the most reliably documented slump in the working day, and it is also the window in which most people schedule their most punishing meeting. (We’re doing this to ourselves.)
The rebound is the strange one. Late in the day, when your brain is less sharp, insight work often gets better. Wieth and Zacks found that people solved insight problems more successfully at their non-optimal time of day — the leaky, unfocused brain makes odd connections the focused one filters out. Your 5:40 p.m. idea wasn’t luck. It was the rebound.
One wrinkle: chronotype shifts the clock. A true morning person’s peak may be 7 a.m.; a night owl’s may be 9 p.m., with the whole sequence sliding along with it. Most people land somewhere in the middle. Your three-day map settles the question faster than any online quiz will.
How to use it today:
Sort your recurring work into two piles: analytical (right answers) and insight (open questions).
Put analytical work in your peak. Put insight work in your rebound.
Put the stuff that survives a dull brain — admin, filing, invoicing, inbox — in your trough. The trough is not wasted time. It’s just cheap time, and you should spend it on cheap tasks.
3) How it’s been applied

Violinists, pilots, classrooms, offices
This isn’t a new idea looking for evidence. It’s an old finding that keeps getting re-discovered by people who need results.
The violinists. Ericsson’s 1993 study of the Berlin Music Academy is famous for the “10,000 hours” number nobody reads carefully. The part worth reading: the best violinists practiced in sessions of roughly 90 minutes, took real breaks between them, rarely exceeded about four hours of deliberate practice a day, and slept more than their peers — naps included. They didn’t grind longer. They worked in waves and defended the recovery.
The pilots. NASA studied fatigue on long-haul flights and found that a planned nap of about 26 minutes improved performance and alertness substantially compared to a no-nap control group. The nap wasn’t a luxury; it was a piece of the operating procedure.
The classrooms. The Danish result from the 1 Percenter — scores falling hour by hour, breaks restoring them — is energy mapping at national scale. Same brain, same day, different results depending on where in the wave the test landed.
The offices. Corporate energy-management programs (Loehr and Schwartz’s work is the most cited version) took the same principle into knowledge work: 90-minute work blocks, deliberate renewal between them, tasks matched to states. Same wave, business casual.
🚀 Build Your Week
Take your three-day map and mark your peak, trough, and rebound windows.
Move one recurring task into its correct window this week. One. Not the whole calendar.
Structure the peak as a single 90-minute block, not a four-hour marathon with a snack in it.
Protect the boundary between blocks with something that isn’t a screen — walk, water, stare out a window like a Victorian widow. Ten minutes counts.
Reassess Friday. Did the task get easier, or did you just move it?
An honest limit: the 90-minute cycle is a model, not a stopwatch, and your job may not care about your chronotype. If your peak is 9 a.m. and that’s when standup lives, you can’t schedule your way out of that this week. What you can do is stop putting your hardest solo work in the trough by accident — which is where most of the loss actually happens.
